Title: Aceh, West Papua and Timor Lorosae: Three models of TNC influence on post-colonial liberation movements.

Submitted by: George Aditjindro

The influence of TNC-dominated extractive projects on post-colonial liberation movements can be examined by looking at models from three Indonesian territories. In Aceh, the natural gas project of Mobil International contributed to the emergence of the Free Acheh Movement. Mobil Oil and its Indonesian partners are still working against this movement obtaining international support. The Free Papua Organisation emerged in the territory before the Freeport McMoRan mine began operation and it took some time before the Amungme people, who own the mine site, took a central position in the liberation movement. The US backing of Freeport McMoRan also hinders the West Papuan movement obtaining international support. In contrast, the exploitation of the Timor Sea hydrocarbon resources was initially not a factor in the emergence of the East Timorese independence movement. This took a more pragmatic approach by negotiating directly with the Timor Gap consortia. This contributed to undermining Indonesia's claim over East Timor.
