Title: Asia and cultural life in Australia - will the twain ever meet?Submitted by: Alison Carroll, Director, Arts Programs, The Asialink Centre, University of Melbourne, AustraliaThe serious, integrated study of the cultures of Asia by Australia's professional cultural community remains incidental, random and marginal. After a decade of sustained discussion of the issue, knowledge and understanding of Asia remains outside the Pale of mainstream cultural education and development in this country. And, now, the political will to address this seems to be diminishing. What are the reasons? Are there solutions? And, most crucially, do we as a community want this situation to change?
