Title: Communities and Conservation in the Philippine Uplands

Submitted by: Rob Cramb, Reader in Agricultural Development, School of Natural & Rural Systems Management, University of Queensland, Australia

Agricultural land degradation in the Philippine uplands is a major environmental concern. Numerous projects have been undertaken by government and non-government organisations to promote conservation farming practices. However, few projects have had any lasting success. This paper discusses some of the reasons for the widespread failure of conservation efforts among upland farmers and investigates the prospects for a community-based 'landcare' approach.
