Title: Board Compensation, Performance, and Corporate Governance in Publicly-Listed Malaysian Companies

Submitted by: Ergun Dogan and Russell Smyth, Department of Economics, Monash University, Australia

In this study we will investigate the determinants of top executive (or Board) compensation in Malaysian companies listed on Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange. Our objective is to examine whether corporate governance structure affects the relationship between pay and performance.

Corporate governance issues are hotly debated in Malaysia and elsewhere in the region. Some of the problems that these countries had faced during the crisis of 1997 are blamed on weak corporate governance structures. Our study has some implications for an important part of this structure.
