Title: Globalisation , Diversity and Tourism on Lombok: Indigenous Employment in the Hotel SectorSubmitted by: Fleur Fallon, PhD student, School of Economic Studies, University of New England, New South Wales, AustraliaThis paper forms part of a PhD thesis that examines the relationships between global and local forces in the context of sustainable tourism on the island of Lombok, Indonesia. One key indicator of sustainable tourism is indigenous employment in tourism. Indonesian government policy cites tourism as a vehicle for economic growth and for increasing employment opportunities. Data available do not analyse employment in terms of local island populations. The risk exists for local island populations to be further marginalised as most tourism jobs are taken by a more highly educated, skilled and experienced workforce from other islands. This paper presents an analysis of employment and training opportunities for Lombok islanders -Sasaks and Baloks (Balinese born on Lombok) - in the tourist hotel sector on Lombok. A survey to obtain primary data was conducted during a visit to Lombok early 1999. 'Return to Abstracts menuCarol Burnett Phone: 61 - 3 - 9349 1899 Email: c.burnett@asialink.unimelb.edu.au
