Title: Opium, Finance and the Biggest Bullies in Republican Guangdong

Submitted by: John Fitzgerald (Prof), Department of Asian Studies, La Trobe University, Australia

Guangdong Province was a site of keen competition among Federalist, Nationalist, Communist and Warlord forces during the Republican era (1912-1949) in China. The ideological, political and military aspects of this competition are fairly well-known. This paper focusses on a relatively little-known aspect of this competition: access and control of the Opium trade as a key dynamic of local, provincial and regional politics in South China.
