Title: Doing Business in the Philippines: The Australian ExperienceSubmitted by: Dr. Elvira Fonacier, Wollongong University College, Sydney Centre, AustraliaIn the last decade, the Philippines has attracted global business either as a source of cheap labour and raw materials or because of the potential market offered by the country's enormous population. Australia is one of the many countries that conduct business in the Philippines. Australian companies operate their business either as partners with Filipino companies or with other international companies. As such, Australians come to the Philippines and engage in business side by side with their Filipino counterparts, in different levels of management. It is common to find people who are interested in doing business with a country simply because they have read that it is the new, "hot" economy, yet they know nothing about the country, its history, evolution of thought, people, or how things are generally handled in business and social contexts. This paper describes the Australian experience of conducting business in the Philippines and the relationship these two cultures have in corporate and social practices. Although not meaning to be prescriptive, the paper also puts forward tips and suggestions in understanding and relating with the Filipino.
